Paleo Savory Chive Scones

I’m extra excited to share today’s recipe because SCONES and SAVORY. You guys probably know by now that I am a savory food girl through and through, I just tend to share more sweet recipes because that’s what’s missing in the gluten-free world. Every once in a while I have to come through for myself and share some savory goodness, though, and these scones are the perfect way to do so!

These paleo scones have been on my “to-make” list for several months but I haven’t been able to find nutritional yeast in the midst of COVID, so they got pushed out all the way to the end of summer. Why are people buying up all the nutritional yeast? I have no clue. It doesn’t really seem like the type of thing people need to hoard in a pandemic, but maybe more people wanted savory vegan scones than I realize. After testing these out I can’t blame them! I have a blueberry scone recipe that I truly love but these are certainly their equal in every way.

Vegan and Grain Free Cheddar Chive Scones:

The only thing keeping these savory scones from being vegan is the 1 egg, and the “cheddar” is actually just nutritional yeast. If eggs are a no-go for you I’m pretty confident you could swap it out for a flax egg if you need, though I have not personally tested this yet. Aside from that these are entirely plant-based scones!

Ingredients for Paleo Savory Chive Scones:

Scones might sound intimidating but I find them actually quite simple! All you need is one bowl and the following ingredients to make you savory scone dreams come true:

  • Cassava flour–this is key to a gluten-like scone (without the gluten of course.)
  • Coconut Flour – I find this helps my cassava flour go further and gives a tighter crumb
  • Tapioca Starch – a starchy flour that gives a nice flakey texture
  • Coconut sugar – You can sub regular sugar if desired.
  • Baking soda
  • Coconut oil – make sure this is cold or room temp when you cut it into the flours
  • Egg – to help bind the scones and add protein
  • Full fat coconut milk, or another non-dairy milk
  • Nutritional Yeast – a nutty, vegan seasoning of sorts that gives a cheesy taste to the scones
  • Chives – I’m new to the chive game but I’m in love! These are delicious in baked goods.
  • Salt – A hearty pinch of salt brings out the flavor in these savory scones

How to make moist, flakey grain-free scones:

  • Don’t forget to line your baking sheet with parchment paper!
  • Measure carefully and accurately–too much flour with create a dry scone
  • Use cold coconut oil and cut it into the flour with a fork or pastry cutter instead of pouring in melted oil.
  • Finely chop your chives
  • Serve with melty ghee or even some mashed avocado–omg. So good!

COURSE Breakfast
Cuisine American
PREP TIME 10 minutes
COOK TIME 20 minutes
TOTAL TIME 30 minutes
SERVINGS 6

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/4 cup cassava flour
  • 1/4 cup tapioca starch
  • 2 tbsp coconut flour
  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp chopped chives
  • 1/2 tsp salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine cassava flour, tapioca starch, coconut flour, coconut sugar, nutritional yeast, and baking soda in a large bowl. Use a fork or pastry cutter to cut the coconut oil into the flour until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in egg and coconut milk until well combined, then fold in the chives.
  3. Wait 5 minutes for the coconut flour to absorb, and then scoop the batter onto the center of the baking sheet and form a large circle.
  4. Using a rubber spatula or sharp knife, “wiggle” the batter apart into either 6 or 8 scone triangles. Wet your fingers under a bit of cold water and mold the edges, if needed. (Alternatively, you can scoop the batter onto the sheet in 8 evenly spaced circles.)
  5. Bake 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden. The edges will be crisp, but the inside of the scone should still be soft. Wait 10 minutes and then transfer scones to cool on a wire rack.
